EMERGING TRENDS IN FLEET MANAGEMENT

DSC_0420-1

Fleets and operators are facing industry complexities more than ever. With ongoing shifts in regulations, technologies, and economic standards, it’s important to stay up to date with trends to support operations and keep pace.

Find out which items operators should keep on their radar, and which current changes are rippling through the industry.

SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Several efforts continue in the fight against emissions and for environmental sustainability. The initiatives for greener fleets are a key driver and a push to notify fleets that they will need to adjust soon.

EPA NOx Regulations Constrict Budgets

Regulations are tightening around reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting cleaner technology. The 2027 EPA NOx standards will be stricter, causing trucks to cost significantly more. Fleets should consider strategic equipment decisions regarding the regulations that will affect manufactured trucks in 2027 and beyond.

Electric Vehicles

EV trucks are no longer just new—they’re here to stay. Volvo, Kenworth, Peterbilt and Hyundai Translead are among the OEM’s offering EV and FCEV (hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles) truck lines.

EV trucks and EPA NOx regulations work hand in hand to support these environmental initiatives. The benefits of a cleaner environment do come with high costs for electric equipment, which will become a major decision point for fleets.

COMPLIANCE AND REGULATIONS

New policies and regulations are making headwinds in the industry, resulting in major changes for drivers individually, operational pipelines and fleets overall.

DOT Blitz Week Results

The 2026 DOT 72-hour Inspection Blitz concluded with unexpected, record-breaking results. Over 31% of inspected drivers and equipment was placed out of service. This year's inspection focus was on ELD tampering and cargo securement.

Effective May 20th, 2026, 12 electronic logging devices were revoked from the approved registered ELD list by the FMCSA. Among the revoked devices, high insufficient logging activity was found from the blitz that resulted in drivers being unable to complete hauls.

Automated Compliance

Through new software and tools, automation is changing the game to reduce human error and administrative logging for fleets and drivers to stay in compliance with devices and systems. ELD’s, files, reports and management software are among the items that automation is creating easier solutions for.

Reducing time spent on manual paperwork, filing, and tracking logs will increase efficiency on administrative tasks and help keep up with regulatory compliance.

AUTONOMOUS TRUCKS

The future is the present as large fleets and manufacturers are deploying the first autonomous trucks and Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS). PepsiCo just deployed 41 autonomous trucks across Arizona, Texas and Arkansas as its first approved hauls hit the roads.

Fleet managers must begin to understand how ADAS will affect operations and drivers. Preparation for regulations and training should begin to be integrated into onboarding processes and systems.
